在开采缓倾斜、倾斜和急倾斜矿体时，阶段、矿块是将井田进一步划分的开采单元。

在井田中，每隔一定的垂直距离，掘进与矿体走向（矿体延展方向）一致的主要运输巷道，把井田在垂直方向上划分为若干矿段，这些矿段成为阶段（或中段）。其范围是：沿走向以井田边界为界，沿倾斜以相邻上下两个阶段运输平巷为界（图1）。上下两个阶段运输平巷之间的垂直距离称为阶段高度或中段高度，阶段一般用所在水平标高表示，如-1200m中段（水平、阶段）。

在阶段中按一定尺寸将阶段划分为若干独立的回采单元，称为矿块。显然，矿块是阶段的一部分。矿块是缓倾斜、倾斜和急倾斜矿体最基本的回采单元，以后将要研究的采矿方法，就是在这样的基本回采单元中采用什么样的方法将矿石有效地回采出来。
